Flicker is brightness, colour or texture pulsing between frames in generated video. It is most visible on flat surfaces, in shadows and on large areas of uniform colour, and it has one cause with three fixes.
TL;DR
- Cause: temporal instability. Each frame is generated with some independence, and small variations read as pulsing
- Worse on cheap tiers and on flat, evenly lit compositions
- Fix 1: change the composition. Add texture and variation so there is nothing flat to pulse
- Fix 2: move up a tier. Real capability difference
- Fix 3: grade and grain in the edit. Hides most of what is left, and costs nothing
Why it happens
A video model generates frames that are locally coherent but does not compute a single consistent lighting solution across the whole clip. Small frame-to-frame differences in how it renders a surface become visible as pulsing when played at speed.
This is why flicker shows up most on large flat areas: a plain wall, a clear sky, a smooth tabletop, deep shadow. Those regions have nothing in them except the model's rendering of a uniform value, so any variation in that value is the only thing moving.
Fix 1: compose against it
The cheapest fix and the one people skip.
Add texture. A wall with visible plaster or brick flickers far less than a smooth painted one, because the texture dominates and the variation hides inside it.
Avoid large uniform areas. Reframe so a flat surface occupies less of the frame.
Avoid deep even shadow. Shadow with some detail in it holds better than a flat black region.
Ask for grain in the prompt. "Visible film grain, slight sensor noise." This adds variation the model renders consistently, which masks the variation it does not.
Avoid extreme even lighting. A perfectly evenly lit scene has nothing but flat values. Named directional light produces variation that holds.
Fix 2: the tier
Canon 8frame prices, a credit is $0.01 at pack rate:
| Model | Clip | Credits | Temporal stability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wan 3.0 at 480p | 5s | 24 | Weakest. Blocking only |
| Veo 3.1 Lite | 8s silent | 33 | Moderate |
| Kling v3 Standard | 5s silent | 57 | Good |
| Seedance 2.5 | 5s at 720p | 157 | Strong |
| Veo 3.1 Standard | 8s with audio | 448 | Best |
Diagnose whether it is the tier: rerun the same prompt one tier up. If the flicker reduces meaningfully, that is your answer. If it does not, the composition is the problem.
Also worth knowing: flicker scales with duration like every temporal artefact. A clip that pulses at 10 seconds may be clean at 5.
Fix 3: grade and grain
This is the fix that works on footage you already have, and it costs nothing.
One grade across the whole timeline. Not per clip. A single look applied to everything compresses the range slightly and reduces how visible the variation is.
A grain overlay across everything. This is the important one. Real grain is temporal noise, and adding a consistent layer of it masks the inconsistent noise underneath. It also fixes the separate problem of generated footage looking too clean next to real footage.
Apply grain to the whole timeline, not just the generated clips, or you move the mismatch rather than solving it.
Slight motion blur on the generated clips, if your real footage has more.

Fix 4: cut shorter
The blunt instrument, and it works. Flicker needs time to be noticed. A 1.5-second cut inside a rhythm of other cuts gives the viewer no chance to register pulsing that would be obvious over six seconds.
Generate 5 seconds and use the best 1.5, which is how generated footage gets cut anyway.
What will not work
Regenerating the same prompt repeatedly. Flicker is a property of the model and the composition, not of luck. Ten attempts at the same flat wall produce ten flickering clips.
Upscaling. There is no video upscaler on this canvas, and even where one exists, upscaling amplifies temporal noise rather than reducing it.
Sharpening. Makes it worse, because it increases the visibility of frame-to-frame differences.
FAQ
Why does my AI video pulse or flicker? Temporal instability: frames are generated with some independence and small variations show as pulsing, worst on flat surfaces.
Which model flickers least? Veo 3.1 Standard at 448 credits, and Seedance 2.5 at 157 among mid-tier options.
Can I fix flicker in post? Largely. A grade plus a grain overlay across the whole timeline hides most of it.
Does upscaling help? No, and there is no video upscaler here anyway.
Add texture, move a tier, then grade and grain everything. The 8frame canvas is free and unlimited, and generation is paid from $19/month.
