Best Free AI Video Editors in 2026: Watermarks, Export Resolution and AI Limits Compared

Free AI video editors checked against their own pages: Clipchamp (1080p, no watermark), DaVinci Resolve (free up to Ultra HD, AI in Studio), Edits by Instagram (4K, no watermark), Descript and Kapwing (720p with a watermark), CapCut. Plus what the 8frame Video Editor does next to the AI generators, and what it does not.

The best free AI video editor in 2026, if you want clean exports, is Microsoft Clipchamp: its pricing page says you can "export videos in up to 1080p (full HD) video resolution for free, with no watermarks", and the free plan includes AI subtitles, voiceovers and silence removal. On a phone, Edits by Instagram exports "in 4K with no watermark". For serious editing on a desktop, DaVinci Resolve's free version handles Ultra HD at 60 fps, but most of its AI tools are in the paid Studio version. Descript and Kapwing have the best text-based and browser AI tools, but their free exports carry a watermark and are limited to 720p on their pricing pages.

A free AI editor cuts and polishes footage you already have. If you also need the footage itself (AI clips, a voiceover, music), that is generation, and it is paid everywhere that does it well. 8frame puts both in one place: a Video Editor with a timeline next to the AI video, voice and music tools. The canvas is free and unlimited; generation is paid from $19/month.

The picks

Clipchamp: the cleanest free export

Clipchamp is Microsoft's browser and Windows editor. Its pricing page is the clearest free offer in this list: "Export videos in up to 1080p (full HD) video resolution for free, with no watermarks", with "AI video editing features like AI subtitles, voiceovers, and silence removal" on the free plan. Microsoft's help centre adds that "the Clipchamp video editor does not add a visual, audio, or any other kind of watermark".

The catch is in the same help article: if your project uses premium stock or features, "no watermark gets added but you will not be able to export and save your video" until you remove them or upgrade. Premium comes with Microsoft 365 Personal and Family; Clipchamp's own page shows no standalone price, so we don't quote one. If a list you read elsewhere gives a lower free export resolution, it is out of date: the current pricing and help pages both say 1080p.

Pick it if: you want a free browser editor whose free export is clean and full HD, with auto subtitles included.

DaVinci Resolve: the most editor for nothing

DaVinci Resolve is a professional desktop editor, and its free version is not a trial. Blackmagic Design's product page says: "The free version works with virtually all 8-bit video formats at up to 60fps in resolutions as high as Ultra HD 3840 x 2160."

The AI is where free and paid split. The Studio version "includes everything in the free version plus the DaVinci AI Neural Engine", and Blackmagic says the Neural Engine powers "many of the features found exclusively in DaVinci Resolve Studio", including magic mask object tracking, AI voice isolation, a music remixer and a dialogue separator. Studio was shown at $236 on the US site (crossed out from $295), which reads as a sale price. The product page does not discuss watermarks or commercial terms for the free version, so we don't claim either.

Pick it if: you edit on a desktop, want colour, audio and effects in one free tool, and can live without most AI features.

Edits by Instagram: the free phone pick

Edits is Instagram's free mobile editor. Its App Store listing says "Export your videos in 4K with no watermark and share to any platform" and lists capture of "high-quality clips up to 10 minutes long". The one AI feature the listing names is "AI animation" for images. The app is free with in-app purchases, sold by Instagram, and you sign in with an Instagram account.

Pick it if: you shoot and edit vertical video on a phone and post to Reels, TikTok or Shorts.

Descript: AI editing by text, watermarked on free

Descript edits video by editing the transcript. The free plan is "$0" with "60 minutes (1 hr) / month" of media, "100 (one-time)" AI credits, and its AI tools (Underlord, Studio Sound, filler-word removal) marked "Limited". Exports are capped: the help centre says "Free plan users are limited to 720p export", and "Users on a Free drive will see a Descript watermark in the bottom-right of exported videos." Hobbyist is $16 per person a month on the annual toggle ($24 month to month) and adds 1080p, watermark-free export and 400 AI credits a month.

Pick it if: you edit talking-head video, podcasts or interviews and want to try text-based editing before you pay.

Kapwing: browser AI tools, short free exports

Kapwing's free plan offers "Unlimited exports with a watermark", videos "up to 4 minutes long", 5 GB of storage kept for 3 days, and 10 AI credits, including "Auto-subtitling (up to 10 mins)" and text to speech up to a minute. Its own pages disagree on resolution: the pricing page lists "720p video quality" on free, while the video editor page says "Kapwing supports export up to 1080p on the free plan and up to 4K on Pro plans." Pro is listed at $16 with 1,000 credits a month.

Pick it if: you need a quick browser edit with auto subtitles and a watermark is acceptable, for example for a draft.

CapCut: popular, but its terms are thin on its own pages

CapCut is the default editor for many short-form creators, but its own pages say little about the free plan. The help centre says "Certain advanced templates, effects, and stock elements add a watermark when used in the free version", and that templates "often include a small CapCut watermark at the end of the video". The pricing page lists no free-plan export resolution and served its paid plans in euros to us, so we don't quote a price.

Pick it if: you already use it; check the end of every export for a watermark.

Editing is not generation

Every editor above works on footage you bring. Some add small generative extras (a voiceover, an animated photo), but none of their free plans is a way to make the shots themselves. When the shot does not exist (a product in a setting you can't film, a scene, a cutaway), you need a video model, and that costs money per clip on every service that hosts them. For the free tiers on the generation side, see the best free AI video generators.

The 8frame Video Editor: where it fits

8frame is a canvas for AI generation with a separate Video Editor mode. It is not a replacement for DaVinci Resolve. It exists so the clips, voiceover and music you generate on 8frame can be cut together without exporting them to another app first.

What the Video Editor has:

What it does not have: no audio transcription (captions come from a script you paste, so check their timing against the voice), no SRT export, no curves, colour wheels or LUTs, and no video upscaler. On the canvas, the Montage node joins 2 to 10 clips with transitions for 10 credits, but the merged file has no sound, so put dialogue, music or sound effects on the Video Editor timeline instead.

What the footage costs (credits, a credit is about $0.01 at pack rate):

What you add Tool Credits
A 5 s clip with sound, 720p Creatify Boreal 7
A 5 s clip, 720p Pruna p-video 14
A 5 s clip with sound, 720p Grok Imagine 48
An 8 s clip with sound, 720p Veo 3.1 Lite 54
A 5 s clip from your image, with sound Kling v3 Standard 86
A voiceover up to 1,000 characters ElevenLabs TTS 13 per started 1,000 characters
60 s of music MiniMax Music 3 17
A sound effect ElevenLabs SFX 1 to 6 by length

A 30-second vertical ad built from six Boreal clips, a voiceover under 1,000 characters and 60 seconds of music: 42 + 13 + 17 = 72 credits, about $0.72 at pack rate. We have priced these tools but not measured their output quality, so run one clip before you commit to six. Failed generations are refunded automatically. 8frame output has no watermark on any plan, and commercial use is cleared on paid plans.

How to choose

FAQ

What is the best free AI video editor with no watermark? Clipchamp, by its own pages: 1080p exports for free with no watermark, plus AI subtitles and voiceovers. On a phone, Edits by Instagram says it exports in 4K with no watermark. DaVinci Resolve's free version goes up to Ultra HD, but most of its AI tools need Studio.

Is DaVinci Resolve really free? Yes. The free version works with "virtually all 8-bit video formats at up to 60fps" up to Ultra HD 3840 x 2160. The AI Neural Engine features, such as magic mask and voice isolation, are in DaVinci Resolve Studio, shown at $236 on Blackmagic's US site on 2026-10-27.

Do Descript and Kapwing free plans add a watermark? Yes. Descript says free users "will see a Descript watermark in the bottom-right of exported videos" and limits free exports to 720p. Kapwing's free plan is "Unlimited exports with a watermark", up to 4 minutes per video.

Can a free AI video editor make the video for me? Mostly no. These editors cut, caption and polish footage you already have; some add a voiceover or a photo animation. Making new shots takes a video generation model, which is paid per clip on 8frame and on most services.

Is the 8frame Video Editor free? The canvas is free and unlimited; generation is paid from $19/month. The Video Editor cuts clips, voice and music on a timeline, with captions generated from a pasted script. A new account starts with no credits, and AI clips cost from 7 credits for 5 seconds with sound on Creatify Boreal.
