Correction, 2026-10-02: we wrote that Kling's free plan stays below 1080p and gets daily login credits. Kling's own pages disagree on free-plan resolution (its credits policy lists 1080p videos as premium-only, its video generator page advertises 1080p export), so we no longer state one. Its credits policy offers daily login credits to "Kling subscribers" during events, and its plan table gives the free Basic plan "No monthly Credits", which the summary and the table now say. We also removed a line suggesting a watermark can be cropped (Kling's paid-service terms ask non-members to keep its brand label on what they generate) and rewrote two claims we had not measured: that a clip below 1080p "can fall apart" once a platform re-encodes it, and that a paid plan "pays for itself" in recovered time.
Correction, 2026-09-30: the earlier version gave free-tier figures we could not match to the vendors' current pages (Kling's "66 credits a day", Runway's "25 seconds", Pika's "80 credits a month"), said 8frame output goes "up to 4K" (the highest on 8frame is 2K), and got the worked example's total wrong. Every competitor fact below is now quoted from the vendor's own page, with the date we read it.
Free AI video plans are real and useful, but they are built to prototype, not to ship. A free plan wins when you are learning a model, testing a concept or making something for yourself. A paid plan wins the moment the output has to be watermark-free, licensed for commercial use, and available in the volume the work needs. Ride the free plan as far as it takes you, and learn to recognise the point where it stops serving the work.

What free plans actually give you
Runway Free
Runway's pricing page describes the Free plan as "Free forever" with "125 one-time credits to explore Runway's AI tools" that do not expire. The same page prices the Standard plan's 625 monthly credits as "104s of Gen-4 Turbo" or "52s of Gen-4.5", so 125 credits is about 20 seconds of Gen-4 Turbo or 10 of Gen-4.5. "No watermarks" is listed among the Standard plan's features. Enough to learn the interface and judge Runway's motion; not enough for a deliverable.
Pika Free
Pika's Free plan has "0 credits / month · packs only": you buy credit packs to generate. It includes "No watermark" and access to all models, but not a commercial licence; Pika's $10 Starter plan (900 credits a month) does not include one either, and the commercial licence starts on the $35 Creator plan. Plan credits "refresh each billing period and do not roll over"; top-up credits last 365 days.
Kling free plan
Kling's credit guide lists the Basic plan as "$0; free forever" with "No monthly Credits", and says its "generated content is not for commercial use". Kling's video generator page says "free generations include a watermark. Memberships are watermark-free", and its credits policy lists "Watermark removal" among the premium-only functions. The same policy describes daily login credits as an event offer: "During the event (as shown in the interface), Kling subscribers can claim daily credits upon login/refresh", with amounts "subject to platform announcement", so a free account should not count on them. On resolution, Kling's own pages disagree: the credits policy lists "1080p videos" as premium-only, while the video generator page advertises 1080p export. 8frame has no free generation. The canvas is free and unlimited; generation starts at the Starter plan, $19 a month for 1,000 credits, which buys about 21 silent Kling 2.6 Pro clips (47 credits each) or 9 Wan 2.5 clips (102). Output is watermark-free on every plan and commercial use is cleared on paid plans. Unused credits roll over while you are subscribed, and one pool covers every model on the canvas.

The one genuinely free route with no watermark is self-hosting open weights such as Wan 2.2, released under the Apache 2.0 licence, on your own GPU.
The three signals you've outgrown free
You don't upgrade on a schedule. You upgrade when the work hits one of these walls.
1. You need commercial rights. The moment a clip is going into a paid ad, a client deliverable or anything that makes money, a non-commercial free plan is off the table however good the output looks. Cropping out a watermark does not change that, and Kling's paid-service terms ask non-members to keep its brand label on what they generate.
2. The watermark or resolution is degrading the output. A watermark rules a clip out wherever it will be seen. For resolution, judge a free clip after the platform you publish on has re-encoded it, not in the preview. When the free plan's limit shows in the final result, you have outgrown it.
3. The allowance or queue is slowing your iteration. A one-time or daily allowance runs out mid-idea, and some plans reserve faster lanes for higher tiers: Pika lists its priority queue only from the $95 Fancy plan. If the limit is breaking your flow, weigh the plan's price against the time the limit is costing you.
If none of these is true, stay free. There's no prize for paying early.
The upgrade-path math
Single-tool subscription. Moving from a free plan to that tool's paid plan means a monthly commitment and, often, a pool that resets: Pika's plan credits do not roll over, and Runway says credits roll over only on its Max plan, for one month. Multi-model upgrade. On 8frame one Starter plan's 1,000 credits cover every model: Kling 2.6 Pro at 47 credits for 5 silent seconds, Wan 2.5 at 102, Veo 3.1 from 27 credits (Lite, 4 seconds with audio) to 448 for the full model at 8 seconds. Unused credits roll over while you are subscribed.
Worked example: you validated a concept on a free plan and need 20 commercial clips this month. Drafting 20 on Veo 3.1 Lite (27 credits each, 540) and finishing them on Kling 2.6 Pro silent (47 each, 940) is 1,480 credits: a $19 Starter month plus one $10 top-up pack of 1,000 credits. Start free. Use the free plan to learn the model and validate the concept, and push it until one of the three signals fires. Then ask one question: is my monthly volume steady and heavy on one tool, or spiky and spread across models? Steady and heavy on one tool points to that tool's subscription. Spiky, uneven or spread across several models points to one credit pool with rollover.
