Why Is My AI Image Background Not Transparent? Five Causes and the Fix for Each

You asked for a transparent background and got a white one, or a grey checkerboard that is part of the picture. Why image models paint every pixel, the one setting on 8frame that returns transparency (GPT Image 1.5), why an upscale or the wrong download can flatten your cutout, and the order of steps that keeps it.

An AI image that should have a transparent background but does not almost always has one of five causes: the model painted the background because you only asked for it in the prompt, the model has no transparency setting, a later step (an upscale or an edit) flattened the cutout, you downloaded a version that is not the original file, or the app you opened it in shows transparency as a colour. The fix is usually an extra step or a different order, not a better prompt.

TL;DR

1. You asked for transparency in the prompt

An image model returns a picture: every pixel has a colour. Writing "transparent background" or "PNG with no background" in the prompt describes how you want the image to look, and the model can only answer with something it can draw. Usually that is a plain white or grey background. Sometimes it is a grey-and-white checkerboard, the pattern editing apps use to show transparency, drawn into the picture.

How to tell: open the file in a second app, or place it over a coloured layer. If the checkerboard is still there, it is part of the image.

Fix: ask for what makes the next step easy instead. "Isolated on a plain, flat, light grey background, soft even lighting, no shadow" gives background removal a clean edge to find. Then remove the background (cause 2).

2. The model has no transparency setting

The image models we measured on 8frame return PNG files. A PNG can hold transparency, but only when the model produces it. One model on 8frame has a setting for that: GPT Image 1.5, with Background set to auto, transparent or opaque. The GPT Image tool opens on GPT Image 2 (the default), which does not have the setting, so switch the version to 1.5 first. GPT Image 1.5 costs 2 credits at low quality, 5 or 7 at medium, 18 at high quality for a square image and 26 for other sizes.

For every other model (Nano Banana, Seedream, FLUX, Ideogram, Midjourney and the rest), generate the image, then run Background Removal: 12 credits per image, on the canvas or through the MCP connector. It takes JPG, PNG or WebP up to 12 MB and 5000 x 5000 pixels. Its provider describes the result as the foreground with "varying levels of transparency" around it, which is what keeps hair and soft edges from looking cut with scissors.

So a sticker or a logo mark on 8frame is two steps: Seedream 5 Lite at 6 credits plus removal at 12 is 18 credits, about $0.18 at pack rate. For a full comparison of free and paid removers, see best free AI background remover.

3. A later step flattened the cutout

The cutout was transparent, and then you did something to it.

Fix: change the order. Generate, edit, upscale, then remove the background as the final step. If you upscale on 8frame, BRIA Increase Resolution (6 credits, 2x or 4x, up to 8192 x 8192) and Topaz (11 credits per 24-megapixel block) are the other options in the upscale tool; whichever you use, run Background Removal after it.

4. You downloaded a different version

8frame keeps the file as the model delivered it and also makes smaller WebP previews. The download menu offers Small, Medium and Large (those previews) and Original (the stored file). For a cutout you will place in a design, take Original: it is the full-size file the removal produced, and it avoids relying on how a resized preview was made.

5. The app shows transparency as a colour

Some viewers and chat apps show transparent areas as black or white, and some flatten an image when you send it. Before you decide the cutout failed:

The order that keeps transparency

  1. Generate on a plain, contrasting background (or with GPT Image 1.5 set to transparent).
  2. Make your edits.
  3. Upscale if you need the size.
  4. Remove the background last, 12 credits.
  5. Download the Original and check it on a dark and a light layer.

FAQ

Why does my AI image have a checkerboard background? The model drew the checkerboard as part of the picture, because the prompt asked for transparency. A prompt cannot make pixels transparent. Run Background Removal, or use GPT Image 1.5 with Background set to transparent.

Which AI image model on 8frame makes transparent PNGs? GPT Image 1.5, with its Background setting on transparent. The GPT Image tool opens on GPT Image 2, which has no such setting, so switch the version.

Why did my cutout get a white background after upscaling? Clarity upscale returns a JPG, which cannot hold transparency. Upscale first and remove the background last.

How much does a transparent PNG cost on 8frame? Background Removal is 12 credits per image, on top of the image itself: for example 6 for Seedream 5 Lite plus 12, so 18 credits.

Can 8frame remove the background from a video? No. Background Removal is for images only.
