The best free AI emoji generator for most people is already on their phone: Apple's Genmoji, if the phone is an Apple Intelligence iPhone. For a custom emoji you upload to Discord or Slack, the generator matters less than the file: Discord caps emoji at 256 KiB and suggests 128 x 128, Slack says square images under 128 KB with transparent backgrounds work best. Most web tools give a small free allowance and some watermark free exports. On 8frame, an emoji is a generated image plus a background cutout, about 18 credits, and then a resize.
TL;DR
| Tool | What's free | Catch | Where the emoji works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Genmoji | Included with Apple Intelligence | Needs an iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max or iPhone 16 or later; "Usage limits may apply" | Messages, stickers, Tapbacks on Apple devices |
| Kapwing | 10 credits | Free exports carry a watermark; Pro listed at $16 a month, 1,000 credits | Download and upload anywhere |
| Fotor | "Basic" plan, "Limited Free credits" | "Watermark-Free" is a plan-table feature; which tiers include it, and prices, were not readable | Download and upload anywhere |
| emojis.com | A free generator, per its homepage | Free limit and price not published (its pricing page did not load for us) | Download and upload anywhere |
| Pixel Studio (Google) | Nothing now | Google: "You can no longer create images in Pixel Studio" | Off the list |
| 8frame | Generation is paid | About 18 credits per emoji with cutout, from $19/month | Download and upload anywhere |
Third-party facts from the vendors' own pages, fetched 2026-10-27.
How we picked
The pages that come up first for "free AI emoji generator" are mostly vendor tool pages and lists from 2024 and 2025; two of them now return 404, and the comparison on another is an image rather than a table. Apps that have changed since (Pixel Studio no longer creates images) still appear in them. So we read each vendor's own page, dated every fact, and added what none of them had: the upload limits of the two places custom emoji usually end up.
The picks
Apple Genmoji: free on the phones that have it
Apple's iPhone guide: "With Apple Intelligence, you can create custom emoji, called Genmoji." You can "add Genmoji to messages, share them as a sticker or Tapback", and you can make one of friends and family from their photos: "You can add up to three people." The requirements are the catch. Apple Intelligence on iOS 27 "is available on an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or iPhone 16 model or later", it "is not available in all languages or regions", and "Usage limits may apply." Apple's support page lists Genmoji on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Vision Pro.
Genmoji is made for Apple's own messaging. If you need a file for a Discord server or a Slack workspace, a web tool or a canvas gives you more control over size and background.
Kapwing: a small free allowance, watermarked exports
Kapwing's pricing page lists the free plan at "10 credits" with "Unlimited exports with a watermark." Pro is listed at $16 a month for 1,000 credits with "No Kapwing watermark"; the page has a monthly or annual toggle, so check which billing the $16 applies to. A watermark on a 128-pixel emoji is hard to live with, so treat the free plan as a test.
Fotor: a free plan with limited credits
Fotor's pricing page lists a "Basic" plan as "Free forever" with "Limited Free credits". "Watermark-Free" appears in its plan table as a feature, but which tiers include it is shown graphically, not in text, so check the free plan's export before relying on it. Plan prices load in the browser and were not readable to us, so we do not quote one.
emojis.com: free to create, limits unpublished
emojis.com presents itself as a free AI emoji generator. Its pricing page did not load for us when we checked, so the free limit is not something we can state. Try it and see what the account shows.
Pixel Studio: no longer an emoji maker
Older lists include Google's Pixel Studio for AI stickers. Google's help page now says: "You can no longer create images in Pixel Studio," and "You can't save stickers," and points users to Gemini instead. Drop it from your shortlist.
8frame: generate, cut out, resize
On 8frame an emoji takes two steps on the canvas:
- Generate the design in a square ratio on a plain, contrasting background. Seedream 5 Lite costs 6 credits per image, Nano Banana 2 costs 11 at 1K. Ask for "emoji style, one simple face or object, bold outline, flat colours, centred, plain background".
- Remove the background for 12 credits. It returns a PNG cutout. GPT Image 1.5 (not the default GPT Image 2) also has a Background setting with a Transparent option.
About 18 credits per emoji, $0.18 at pack rate; a set of ten is about 180 credits, $1.80. Output carries no watermark on any plan, and commercial use is cleared on paid plans. The canvas keeps the whole set side by side, which helps when ten emoji have to look like one family: reuse the first approved emoji as a reference image for the rest (Nano Banana takes up to 10 references).
One more step is not optional: resize. Generated images on 8frame come out as large PNGs, megabytes in size, and both Discord and Slack want a small file. Downscale the cutout to 128 x 128 in any image editor and export PNG.
Upload limits: Discord and Slack
Discord. Discord's developer docs: "Emojis and animated emojis have a maximum file size of 256 KiB," and emoji "can be uploaded as JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, and AVIF formats." Discord's own guide recommends "128x128. Bigger or smaller will work, but 128x128 is juuuust right." A server without Boosts holds "up to fifty ordinary custom emojis, plus fifty more animated custom emojis"; Level 1 holds 100 of each, Level 2 150, Level 3 250. You need the right server permissions to upload.
Slack. Slack's help centre: "Square images under 128KB and with transparent backgrounds work best. Images can be in JPG, PNG, or GIF format," and GIFs can have up to 50 frames. Note that WebP, fine on Discord, is not on Slack's list. Workspace owners can restrict who adds custom emoji.
| Discord | Slack | |
|---|---|---|
| Size limit | 256 KiB | Under 128 KB works best |
| Shape | 128 x 128 recommended | Square |
| Formats | JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, AVIF | JPG, PNG, GIF |
| Transparency | Supported by PNG, GIF, WebP | "Transparent backgrounds work best" |
Making an emoji that reads at 20 pixels
- One idea per emoji. A face, a hand, an object. Scenes turn to mush at chat size.
- Thick outlines and few colours. Fine lines vanish when downscaled.
- Fill the square. Crop the cutout so the subject touches the edges with a small margin.
- Check it at real size. View the 128-pixel file at 100%, then smaller, on both a light and a dark theme.
- Check the cutout edge. Background removal can leave halos on soft edges. A white halo shows badly on a dark theme.
- Faces of real people need their consent, the same as any image of a person. Never make emoji of public figures or of people who have not agreed.
