A free AI vector generator is only useful if two things hold: the file it gives you is a real vector (SVG or PDF made of paths, not a picture of a vector), and the free plan lets you use it where you need to. Most free plans fail the second test. Recraft's FAQ says images made on its free plan "are owned by Recraft", are public and "are not licensed for commercial use." Kittl's free plan is "For personal use only (no commercial rights)." SVG.io gives 10 free credits a day with commercial use on Pro only. The one free route without those strings is to trace a raster yourself in Inkscape, which is open source.
8frame does not output vectors: every image model on it returns pixels. What it can do is make the clean, flat raster that traces well, for a few credits. That route is below.
TL;DR
| Tool | Real vector out? | What's free | Commercial use on free? | Cheapest paid |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Recraft | Yes, "SVG and PDF" | Limited credits, reset daily (amount not stated) | No: free images "are owned by Recraft" | Basic $12/month, or $10 billed yearly, 1,000 credits |
| Kittl | Yes, "download it as an SVG" | 100 tokens on signup, 2 to 42 per generation | No, "personal use only" | Price not readable on its pricing page |
| SVG.io (now part of PicTrix) | Yes, SVG is the product | 10 credits a day | No, listed under Pro | Not stated on the page we read |
| Adobe Illustrator, Text to Vector Graphic | Yes, inside Illustrator | Listed under paid Firefly plans | Paid plans | Illustrator subscription |
| Inkscape (trace your own raster) | Yes, Trace Bitmap | Free and open source | Yes, your own image, your own file | Free |
| 8frame | No, raster only | Generation is paid | Commercial use on paid plans | $19/month, 1,000 credits |
Third-party facts from the vendors' own pages, fetched 2026-10-27.
How we picked
We read the pages that come up first for "free AI vector generator" and "free AI SVG generator". They are mostly vendor tool pages and one hands-on test from 2025 whose free-credit numbers no longer match the vendors' pages. None of them put the three questions that decide a vector tool side by side: is the output real SVG, what does free allow, and can you use it commercially. That is the table above, every cell from the vendor's own page.
Raster or vector: why it matters
Adobe puts it simply: "Raster files are images built from pixels," while "Vector files use mathematical equations, lines, and curves with fixed points on a grid to produce an image." A vector logo stays sharp from a favicon to a billboard and can be recoloured path by path. A raster saved with an .svg extension, or an SVG that just wraps a PNG, does neither. Open any file you download in a vector editor and check that it is made of paths.
The picks
Recraft: real SVG, but free output belongs to Recraft
Recraft's docs say "Vector images can be exported as SVG and PDF." The free plan has "limited credits" that reset daily, lets you "upload up to three images per day", and "each prompt produces up to two images at a time." Recraft does not state the daily number on its pages, and older articles quoting one disagree, so check your balance after signing up.
The ownership line is the important one. Recraft's pricing FAQ: "Images generated on the Free plan are owned by Recraft. They are publicly visible in the community gallery and are not licensed for commercial use." The Basic plan is $12 a month billed monthly, or $10 a month billed yearly ($120), for 1,000 credits, and "All paid plans include private image generation and commercial usage rights while subscribed." Free Recraft is for exploring, not for a client's logo.
Kittl: SVG download, personal use on free
Kittl's vector generator page says you can "sign up for 100 free tokens to start", that "Each generation uses around 2 to 42 tokens depending on the AI model you choose", and that you can "download it as an SVG that stays sharp at any size". Its pricing FAQ is stricter: the free plan is "For personal use only (no commercial rights)", paid plans include "High-resolution and vector exports", and after cancelling, "premium features like vector exports will be locked." The two pages do not agree on whether SVG export is free, so treat it as a paid feature until you see the download button on your own account. The pricing page did not show plan prices to our fetch.
SVG.io: a daily allowance, commercial use on Pro
SVG.io now redirects to PicTrix, whose page says "SVG.io is now part of PicTrix.ai" and offers "10 free credits per day". Commercial use is listed under the Pro plan only. Prices and watermark rules were not on the page we read.
Adobe Illustrator: Text to Vector Graphic, inside a paid app
Adobe's Illustrator page describes "Text to Vector Graphic, powered by the latest Adobe Firefly Vector Model", which generates editable vectors inside Illustrator. Adobe offers a Firefly free plan with limited daily generations, but Text to Vector is listed under paid Firefly plans, and Adobe's help pages refused our fetch, so we do not quote a credit cost per generation. If you already pay for Illustrator, it is the most direct route; if not, it is not a free one.
Inkscape: the free route with no strings
Inkscape's own project describes it as "a Free and open source vector graphics editor." Its Trace Bitmap feature (Path, then Trace Bitmap) turns a raster image into paths. Tracing is not generation: it vectorises an image you already have. But it adds no licence of its own on top of yours, so a raster you have the rights to becomes a vector you have the rights to. Tracing works best on flat colour, hard edges and few shades, which is why the next section matters.
The generate, cut out and trace route on 8frame
No image model on 8frame outputs vector or SVG. What you can do on the canvas is make a raster that is easy to trace, then trace it in Inkscape:
- Generate in a traceable style. Prompt for "flat vector illustration, solid colours, no gradients, no texture, thick clean outlines, plain white background". Seedream 5 Lite costs 6 credits per image, Nano Banana 2 costs 11 at 1K. Twenty variations on Seedream 5 Lite is 120 credits, about $1.20.
- Cut out the subject. Background removal is 12 credits and returns a PNG cutout. GPT Image 1.5 (not the default GPT Image 2) also has a Background setting with a Transparent option.
- Enlarge before tracing if the image is small. BRIA Increase Resolution is 6 credits (2x or 4x). Clarity (13) is diffusion-based and always doubles the size, so it can change edges; for tracing, the content-preserving option is the safer one.
- Trace in Inkscape, then clean the paths: merge stray shapes, reduce nodes, fix the colours to your exact palette.
About 18 to 30 credits per finished mark before tracing, $0.18 to $0.30 at pack rate. Every plan's output is watermark-free, commercial use is cleared on paid plans, and you keep the files on your own board.
What to check before you use a vector anywhere
- Is it paths? Open the SVG in a vector editor. If it is one embedded image, it is not a vector.
- Node count. Auto-traced or generated paths often carry far more points than needed. Simplify before handing a logo to a printer or a developer.
- Exact colours. Generators and tracers produce near-colours. Replace them with your brand values.
- Text. Generated lettering is shapes, not type. For a wordmark, set real type and convert it yourself.
- Rights. Check the free plan's terms at download time, not after the client has approved.

FAQ
What is the best free AI vector generator? For real SVG output from a prompt, Recraft and Kittl both export vectors, but neither free plan allows commercial use. For a file you can use commercially at no cost, generate or draw a clean raster you own and trace it in Inkscape.
Can I use free AI vectors commercially? On Recraft's free plan, no: free images are owned by Recraft. On Kittl's free plan, personal use only. SVG.io lists commercial use under Pro. Read the plan terms at the time you download.
Can 8frame make SVG files? No. Every image model on 8frame returns raster images. Use it to make a flat, clean image and a cutout, then trace it in a vector editor.
Does tracing a PNG give a real vector? Yes, Inkscape's Trace Bitmap converts an image into paths. Results are best on flat colours and hard edges; photos and gradients trace into many messy shapes.
What image style traces best? Flat solid colours, no gradients or texture, thick clean outlines, a plain background, and enough resolution that edges are crisp.
