For free AI packaging design in 2026, start with Kittl (a design editor with packaging and label sections; its free plan is for personal use), Pacdora (3,000+ dieline templates and 50 AI credits free) and Recraft when the artwork has to end up as a vector (Basic is $12 a month). Kittl's and Recraft's free terms grant no commercial use. No image generator hands you a print file either: on 8frame a concept image costs from 6 credits (Seedream 5 Lite) to 21 (Nano Banana Pro with your real artwork as a reference), about $0.06 to $0.21 at pack rate, and the final artwork is still built on the printer's dieline.
The free options, from their own pages
| Tool | Free plan, as the vendor states it | Commercial use | Print-relevant output | Cheapest paid plan |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kittl | Free plan "For personal use only (no commercial rights)" | Pro and Expert: a Commercial License to "reproduce your designs in up to 500,000 copies across packaging, marketing, digital media, or print" | Paid plans add "High-resolution and vector exports" | Pro $15/month, or $144 a year ($12/month billed annually), per editor |
| Recraft | "limited credits", up to three uploads a day, free images "public" | Free images "are owned by Recraft" and "not licensed for commercial use"; paid plans grant "full ownership and commercial rights" | Vector models; "Vector images can be exported as SVG and PDF" | Basic $12/month, or $10/month billed annually ($120 a year), 1,000 credits |
| Pacdora | 3,000+ dieline templates, 5,000+ mockups, 50 AI credits; "The generated images are public" | Plan table lists "Commercial use permitted" on Business | Dieline template export: none on Free, 15 a month on Lite; AI, PDF and DXF export on Pro and Business | Prices did not load in the page we could read |
| Ideogram | "30 credits each week if they sign in with Google, Apple or Microsoft" | Not stated on the plans page; "On the free plan, everything you generate is public" | Raster images | Plus $20/month, or $15/month ($180 a year), 2,400 credits |
| Adobe Firefly | "free daily generations across image, video, and audio", "Limits refresh every day" | "Outputs from Adobe Firefly AI models are safe for commercial use"; for partner models, "You're responsible for determining whether content generated by partner models is appropriate for your project" | Raster images | Standard US$9.99/month, 2,000 credits |
Recraft publishes per-image credits: its V4.1 Vector model costs 4 credits, so Basic's 1,000 credits make 250 vector images, about 4.8 cents each at the monthly price.
A generated image is not a print file
This is the trap: a generated packaging image looks finished, and it is a picture of a package.
It is RGB. The image models measured on 8frame return PNG files, and the PNG specification defines five colour types (greyscale, truecolour, indexed-colour, and greyscale or truecolour with alpha), built on red, green and blue samples. None is CMYK. PakFactory's artwork guide says "All colors must be in the CMYK color space", and PackMojo's says "All files should be in CMYK color mode."
It is raster, with live-looking text that is not text. PakFactory accepts "PDF (Portable Document Format), AI (Adobe Illustrator), EPS (Encapsulated PostScript)" and requires that "All text objects must be outlined". PackMojo asks you to "Outline all text or vectorize them". No image model on 8frame outputs vector or SVG.
It has no dieline, bleed or safe zone. PackMojo asks that artwork running past the dieline extend at least 0.25 inch (0.64 cm) beyond its edge, and that important artwork or text sit at least 0.125 inch (0.32 cm) from any fold or cut line. PakFactory says "Please do not flatten the artwork and dieline layers." A generated render has none of those layers.
Resolution is arithmetic. PackMojo recommends photos "at least 300dpi", PakFactory "at least 150 - 300 PPI". At 300 pixels per inch, a 2,048-pixel edge covers about 6.8 inches. BRIA Increase Resolution on 8frame enlarges 2x or 4x up to 8192 x 8192 pixels (about 27 inches at 300 ppi), but enlarging adds pixels, not vectors, so read small text again afterwards.
Use generated images for directions, mood and pitch or listing mockups; the print artwork gets rebuilt in vector, in CMYK, on the printer's own dieline.
Label text: drift, and the words a model must not write
A generated label can drift: a letter shifts, a word is almost the word. Read every output letter by letter, and see why AI changes your product label for the fixes.
Regulated copy is a different problem. In the US, the FDA names nine major food allergens (milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans and sesame) and says "The law requires that food labels identify the food source of all major food allergens used to make the food", either in parentheses after the ingredient or in a "Contains" statement. A model does not know your recipe, and it can write plausible-looking ingredients, allergens or nutrition values. Treat every word a model puts on a mockup as a placeholder. The final ingredient list, allergen statement and nutrition panel come from the brand's approved copy, typeset by a person and checked against the rules of each market you sell in.
How to do it on 8frame
Prices from 8frame's pricing code; a credit is about $0.01 at pack rate. Plans start at $19 for 1,000 credits.
| Step | Model or tool | Credits |
|---|---|---|
| Fast drafts from text (no image input) | Pruna p-image | 1 per image |
| Direction boards | Seedream 5 Lite (the Seedream node opens on 5 Pro, 7 at 1K) | 6 per image |
| Front-panel typography ideas | Ideogram 4.5, low / medium / high (text, or a source image plus up to 4 references) | 5 / 9 / 30 |
| Mockup from your real flat artwork and product photo | Nano Banana Pro, up to 10 reference images (the node opens on Nano Banana 2 at 11) | 21 at 1K or 2K, 42 at 4K |
| Cut out the pack | Background removal | 12 |
| Enlarge for a pitch deck or listing | BRIA Increase Resolution, 2x or 4x | 6 |
- Explore. Twenty directions on Seedream 5 Lite: 120 credits. Keep the words generic.
- Try type. Ten front-panel ideas on Ideogram 4.5 at medium: 90. Check the brand name letter by letter.
- Mock up your real artwork. Give Nano Banana Pro your actual flat label and a photo of the pack as references; four mockups: 84. The model redraws the label, so compare it with your file.
- Cut out and enlarge for a deck or a listing: 12 and 6.
- Hand off. A designer rebuilds the chosen direction in vector on the printer's dieline, in CMYK, with outlined text and approved copy.
That run comes to 312 credits, about $3.12, before re-runs. Output has no watermark on any plan, and commercial use is cleared on paid plans. To turn the mockup into a short product clip, use it as the start image of a video: Pruna p-video Draft is 4 credits for 5 seconds at 720p.

FAQ
What is the best AI packaging design generator?
For free exploration, Kittl or Pacdora's dieline templates. For artwork that must end up as a vector, Recraft, from $12 a month. For directions and mockups next to the rest of a campaign, 8frame at 6 to 21 credits an image, with the print file built afterwards on the printer's dieline.
Is there a free AI packaging design tool I can use commercially?
Kittl's free plan is "For personal use only", Recraft's free images "are owned by Recraft", and Ideogram's and Pacdora's free generations are public. The one to check is Adobe Firefly: Adobe says outputs from its own Firefly models "are safe for commercial use", while partner-model output is your responsibility.
Can an AI label generator make a print-ready file?
Not an image generator: its output is an RGB raster picture with no bleed, dieline or outlined text, while PakFactory, for one, asks for CMYK files in PDF, AI or EPS. Use the image as a direction and rebuild it.
Can AI write my ingredients and allergen statement?
No. In the US, the FDA requires food labels to identify the food source of all major food allergens, and a model does not know your recipe. Use the brand's approved copy.
Why does the text on my AI packaging come out wrong?
Generated text drifts. Read every letter, and composite your real label where the words must be exact: why does AI change my product label.
