Correction, 2026-10-02: this page priced its candidates on "Seedream 5" at 6 credits. That model is Seedream 5 Lite, and the Seedream tool opens on Seedream 5 Pro at 7, so pick 5 Lite for the 6-credit price. It listed Imagen 4 Fast (4 credits) as the cheapest usable candidate; we no longer recommend the Imagen 4 models, and the cheapest image on 8frame is GPT Image 2 on low quality, 2 credits. "Image upscale 13" is now BRIA Increase Resolution at 6 (2x or 4x) or Clarity at 13 (always 2x). The page built its advice on a "210 pixels wide" viewing size we cannot source; it now says to judge candidates at feed size and gives YouTube's own thumbnail requirements, checked 2026-10-02. It described free tiers without naming one; it now covers Canva, Adobe Express and Bing Image Creator from their own pages. We removed claims we had not measured: that a real expression outperforms a generated one, that red and white vanish against YouTube's interface, that six words are already unreadable, that some designs "always fail", that most image models handle words unreliably, and a twenty-minute time estimate. The FAQ answers on watermarks and platform rules now cite the vendors' and YouTube's pages.
A thumbnail decides whether the video you already made gets opened, which makes it one of the highest-leverage images in creator work. It is also easy to judge wrong: at full size on a laptop, while viewers meet it much smaller, in a feed or a sidebar, next to other thumbnails.
Free tools exist: template editors such as Canva and Adobe Express with a capped AI allowance, and free image generators such as Bing Image Creator. Generation on 8frame is paid but costs cents per candidate, so the process question matters more than the free one. We have not run a quality test of any tool here, so this page compares terms, prices and process. Disclosure: 8frame is our product; a new account starts with no credits.

What each tool's own pages say:
- Canva Free: the editor and templates, export as PDF, JPG or PNG, and a monthly AI allowance Canva puts at "Up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses" (estimates for simple tasks; heavier tools use more). Removing backgrounds from images is not on the free plan. Pro is listed at US$144 a year for one person.
- Adobe Express Free: US$0, with 100,000+ templates and "Free daily generations" for generating images, text effects and templates; Adobe describes the plan as having "limited generative AI credits". Premium is US$9.99 a month with 250 generative credits.
- Bing Image Creator: 15 free fast creations a day, then the slower standard speed (or Microsoft Rewards points to keep generating fast), up to 200 prompts in 24 hours, and no visible watermark unless you switch one on.
None of these pages states a number for daily generations on the free Adobe plan, and Canva's estimate depends on which AI tools you use. Read the plan's current terms before you build a weekly routine on it.
Why twelve candidates beat one
Treat a thumbnail as a test rather than a design you solve once. You often cannot tell which promise the video should make until you see the options side by side at real size.
The workflow:
- Write the three different promises the video could make. Not three designs, three promises.
- Generate three or four visual directions for each, at 6 credits a piece on Seedream 5 Lite (the Seedream tool opens on 5 Pro at 7, so pick 5 Lite) or on Nano Banana Standard, also 6.
- Shrink them all to feed size and put them in a grid next to real thumbnails from the same search.
- Keep the two that read at a glance. Discard the rest without sentiment.
Twelve candidates cost 72 credits, about $0.72. Shipping your first idea skips the comparison that tells you whether it was the right one.
What to check at small size
- One focal element. Two competing subjects tend to blur together when small.
- Contrast, especially at the edges of the subject. Mid-tone on mid-tone is the first thing to merge.
- As few words as possible. Two to four, and check that each one reads at feed size.
- Faces large enough to read an expression, which means the face takes up a real share of the frame, not a figure in a scene.
- Light and dark backgrounds. Look at the candidate on both before you commit to a colour.
Things to test hardest at this size: thin type, gradients as the only separation, long titles, wide shots, and anything that relies on a small detail.
YouTube's requirements, checked 2026-10-02
YouTube Help asks for custom thumbnails at 3840 x 2160 pixels for videos and 2160 x 3840 for Shorts, at least 640 pixels wide for videos and at least 640 pixels tall for Shorts, as JPG or PNG. Files can be up to 50 MB from a desktop; a video thumbnail uploaded from the mobile app is capped at 2 MB. Shorts thumbnails can only be added in YouTube Studio on a computer, and custom thumbnails need a verified account. The details are in YouTube thumbnail size in 2026.
If your keeper comes out smaller than 3840 x 2160, enlarge it: on 8frame, BRIA Increase Resolution is 6 credits for a content-preserving 2x or 4x (up to 8192 x 8192), and Clarity, which always enlarges 2x and is diffusion-based, is 13. Check faces and lettering at full size afterwards.

Check the starting settings: the GPT Image tool opens on high quality (20 credits for a 16:9 image), so switch to low for the 2-credit price, and the Nano Banana tool opens on Nano Banana 2 at 11 credits (1K), so pick Standard for 6 or Pro for 21.
A month of four videos at twelve candidates each is 48 candidates, 288 credits on Seedream 5 Lite, well inside the 1,000 credits of the $19 Starter plan.
The text question
Image models can misspell words, so the safest route is to generate the picture without text and set the words in your editor, where size and position are exact.
If the words have to live inside the generated image, Nano Banana Pro at 21 credits is the model we recommend for that (more in best AI image generator for text), and you should still check every letter. It costs three and a half times a 6-credit image, so use it for the final rather than for every candidate.
Your own face
Photograph it. A phone photo with a clear expression costs nothing, and it is actually you; a generated version of your own face can come out subtly off, which viewers who know your channel may notice.

FAQ
Is there a free AI thumbnail maker with no watermark? Bing Image Creator adds a visible watermark only if you switch the setting on. Canva's and Adobe Express's pricing pages do not say whether free exports carry one. 8frame output has no watermark on any plan, but generation there is paid.
Does AI-generated thumbnail art break YouTube's rules? Not by itself. YouTube's disclosure page lists using generative AI to create or improve a thumbnail as production assistance that does not need disclosure. Its thumbnails policy bars "A thumbnail that misleads viewers to think they're about to view something that's not in the video", however the image was made.
