You can make AI videos on a phone browser on a small data pack, because the heavy part never touches your phone. The model renders the video on the provider's servers; your phone only sends a prompt and maybe a photo, then downloads the finished file. So the data that counts is the upload going out and the video coming back, and the video is the big one: 10 seconds of AI video weighs from about 3 MB to about 30 MB depending on the model. Choose the model and the length with that in mind, and download only the takes you keep.
TL;DR
- Use Clips or Studio on the phone. Both work in a phone browser. The multi-model canvas and the pro video editor need a screen at least 768 pixels wide.
- Waiting costs almost no data. The render runs on the servers; you can close the tab, and Clips can email you when the clip is ready.
- The download is the big cost. A 15-second Clips video is about 23 MB at the median. 10 seconds of Gemini Omni Flash is about 3 MB; 10 seconds of Kling 2.6 Pro at 1080p is about 30 MB.
- Shrink photos before uploading. Uploads go at full size, and photos over 6,144 pixels on a side are refused anyway.
- Start short. A 5-second Clips video costs 200 credits and is a third of the download of a 15-second one.
What uses data, step by step
| Step | What travels over your connection | How to keep it small |
|---|---|---|
| Opening Clips or Studio | The page itself | Nothing to change |
| Uploading a photo | The whole file, as it is on your phone | Use a smaller or cropped copy |
| Waiting for the render | Status updates only | Close the tab; ask Clips to email you |
| Browsing your images | Small preview copies (256 to 1280 pixels wide) | Nothing to change |
| Playing the result in the app | The video file | Play it once, or download and watch the saved copy |
| Downloading | The full video file again | Download only the takes you keep |
The download: what each clip weighs
8frame does not re-encode or shrink generated video: the file you download is the model's own file, and there is no smaller download option for video. Every model we measured returns H.264 MP4 at 24 frames per second. At the median, 10 seconds weighs:
| Model and resolution | 10 seconds is about |
|---|---|
| Gemini Omni Flash, 720p | 3 MB |
| Seedance 2.0, 480p | 3 MB |
| Seedance 2.5, 480p | 3.5 MB |
| Seedance 2.0, 720p | 6 MB |
| Seedance 2.5, 720p (what Clips renders) | 15 MB |
| Kling v3 Standard, 720p | 22 MB |
| Hailuo H3, 2K | 23 MB |
| Kling 2.6 Pro, 1080p | 30 MB |
Two things stand out. Resolution does not predict size: Kling v3 Standard at 720p is heavier than Hailuo H3 at 2K. And the spread is large: ten 10-second takes on Kling 2.6 Pro at 1080p are about 300 MB, while ten on Gemini Omni Flash are about 30 MB. More models are in AI video file size by model.
For images, the download menu offers Small, Medium and Large copies as well as the Original, so you can save a light version to share and keep the original for later.
Clips on a phone
Clips is the simplest route on a phone: you describe the video, and it writes the script and renders it on Seedance 2.5 at 720p. You choose two things, and both affect data and price:
| Length | Credits | Download at the median |
|---|---|---|
| 5 s | 200 | about 8 MB |
| 10 s | 400 | about 15 MB |
| 15 s | 500 | about 23 MB |
| 20 s | 700 | about 31 MB |
| 30 s | 1,000 | about 46 MB |
Clips opens on the Brand ad preset at 15 seconds. For a first try on mobile data, set it to 5 seconds. For the shape, pick 9:16 for Reels, Shorts, TikTok or WhatsApp Status; Clips also offers Auto, 1:1 and 16:9.
Clips shows a countdown while it renders. You do not need to keep the page open: choose "Email me when this clip is ready", put the phone away, and come back on Wi-Fi to download if you can.
Uploading photos without wasting data
- Send a smaller copy. A photo is uploaded at its full size. Uploads are refused above 50 MB or above 6,144 pixels on the long side, and a photo from a phone's highest-resolution mode can be over that. A resized or cropped copy uploads faster and is still large enough: most models want 300 to 512 pixels a side, and Veo 3.1 wants 1280 by 720 (limits by model).
- iPhone photos: if one is refused, it is probably HEIC. Settings, Camera, Formats, Most Compatible saves new photos as JPEG, per Apple.
- Upload once. An identical file is refused the second time with "This file has already been uploaded"; pick it from your uploaded media instead of sending it again.
A low-data routine
- Draft on a light model in Studio if you want to test an idea first: Gemini Omni Flash at 5 seconds is 85 credits and its files are among the smallest we measured.
- Make the real clip short. 5 or 10 seconds, in the shape you will post.
- Do not pay for the same file twice. Playing a video in the app and then downloading it can move the same file twice. On mobile data, download the take and watch the saved copy, or play it once and download later on Wi-Fi.
- Download only the take you will use.
FAQ
Does generating an AI video use a lot of mobile data? No. The video is rendered on the servers. What uses data is uploading your photo and downloading the finished video.
How big is an AI video file? At the median, 10 seconds is about 3 MB on Gemini Omni Flash, about 15 MB on Seedance 2.5 at 720p (what Clips makes) and about 30 MB on Kling 2.6 Pro at 1080p.
Can I close the browser while my video renders? Yes. The render continues on the servers. In Clips you can ask for an email when the clip is ready.
Can I download a smaller version of my AI video? Not from 8frame: the video download is the model's own file. Images have Small, Medium and Large downloads.
Which part of 8frame works on a phone? Clips and Studio. The multi-model canvas and the pro video editor need a screen at least 768 pixels wide. More in can you make AI videos on your phone.
