Correction, 2026-10-01: an earlier version described Miro's AI credits as per member and the free plan as 10 credits a month. An AI whiteboard is a collaborative online canvas with AI features built into the board itself, such as generating diagrams from text, summarizing sticky notes, or creating images in place.
The term covers two quite different products in 2026, and most confusion about it comes from mixing them up. One is the classic whiteboard with AI features added: Miro AI, FigJam AI, and similar, where the AI assists meeting work (summaries, diagram generation, basic images) against a metered allowance. The other is the AI-native canvas, where generation is the point and the whiteboard qualities (infinite plane, multiplayer, comments) exist to support creative production. The first makes meetings faster. The second makes creative assets.
How it works
Whiteboard-with-AI tools attach model calls to board objects. Select fifty sticky notes and ask for a summary; type a description and get a flowchart; prompt for an image and a generated frame lands on the board. Miro meters this with AI credits: its pricing page lists 25 credits per member per month on Starter and 50 on Business, which its help centre says are pooled across the team, and for the free plan the pricing FAQ says 10 a month while the help centre table says 25. A sticky note or text action costs 1 credit, an image 3, a diagram or table 5.
AI-native canvases invert the ratio. On an infinite canvas AI tool, the objects are media and model nodes: reference images feed generation nodes, outputs land back on the canvas as inputs to the next step, and a chain of nodes becomes a reusable workflow. Collaboration runs the same way as a whiteboard (live cursors, shared boards, comments), but what the board produces is finished creative, not meeting artifacts.
Examples
Whiteboard with AI: a product team runs a retro in Miro, then asks Miro AI to cluster and summarize the notes and turn the action items into a table. Cost: a handful of AI credits from the team's monthly pool (the table alone is 5).
AI-native canvas: a brand team builds a moodboard on an 8frame canvas, then routes the approved references into Nano Banana Pro for stills (21 credits each at 1K or 2K) and Kling v3 Standard for a 5-second clip (86 credits with audio), all on the same board the creative director is watching live. Inviting the team to that board needs a Creator plan (up to 3 members) or Agency (up to 30); the spend was the plan and the generations, not the board.
The pricing models mirror the products. Whiteboards bill per member with AI metered on top; AI canvases tend to bill for compute, with the canvas layer free or cheap.
